Family Recollection

"Grandpa Kellogg (our great Grandfather) came from Westport, Mass. I am told that even when he lived in Kansas, his little home and yard were beautifully groomed and attractive. He landed in Pleasant Hill, MO with the four children,(grandmother was one - he had the seven all together), and stayed because the wagon broke down and he decided to stay. He was a true pioneer. Incidentally, he gave the Opera House to our grandmother; the Cooks got property on which to build and the house is there having just been redone - it is a beauty; Aunt Clara Beeler got the property and house across the Kellogg Lake; Aunt Zaidee got the family home up next to the large greenhouses because she and husband lived there and the husband in turn ran the greenhouse after grandpa died. I remember that old house - somday I will describe - what a place to play! It has been sold and some changes made, and it will never be the same. We used to go over and play in the greenhouses when visiting up there.

Grandmother sold the Opera House in time to the Methodist Church which was there for many years until they built a new one some years ago. I went through the old church (Opera House) a few years ago - some changes but still a beautiful old place. Even though a decaying town, Pleasant Hill had a marvelous history with Jesse James running about, old grand hotels - the works. The railroad helped to set it up. Well, enough of this, but I wanted you to have this to keep amoung your souvenirs. Your children will be interested too."
